HCM is an independent investment firm founded on the belief that excellent returns can be achieved by experienced investors implementing a time-tested and repeatable process. Our predecessor firm, PWMCO, was founded over 40 years ago by Bob Perkins, Greg Wolf, Tom McDonnell, and Tom Perkins.

Today, HCM’s investment approach continues to be implemented by a team with over 100 years of combined investment experience. We currently manage value strategies on behalf of 150 individuals, families, corporations, and foundations. Most of our clients have been with us for over 20 years.

We are a majority employee-owned and veteran-owned business.

OUR HISTORY

In 1985 Bob Perkins left Kemper Financial with the idea that a small independent investment firm could produce outstanding investment results. Bob, along with fellow Kemper colleagues, Tom McDonnell, Tom Perkins, and long-time friend Greg Wolf, founded Mac Per Wolf out of Bob’s apartment in Chicago. What they created was a firm focused on managing a single small-cap fund. Bob and Greg ran Mac Per Wolf and the small-cap Omni Fund began with $3M from the four founders and a handful of friends who believed in the merits of value investing.

Through partnerships with Berger Financial and subsequently, Janus Capital, Mac Per Wolf’s fund business grew to over $20B in peak AUM with significant assets in Small Cap, Mid Cap, and All Cap strategies, and was later renamed Perkins Investment Management (PIM). In 2014 the last piece of PIM was sold to Janus, and Bob and Tom subsequently left the firm in 2018 to co-found Hunter Capital Management in 2020, along with long-time partners Alec Perkins and Tom McDonnell.

OUR NAME

Hunter Capital Management is named after the matriarch of the Perkins family, Dorothy Hunter. While the Perkins boys learned the value of investing from their father, Harry, who worked for over 40 years at Marshall Fields, they learned the importance of strong long-term relationships, honesty, and care for others from their mother Dorothy.

Hunter Capital’s mission is to combine a focus on investing success with the values of honesty, integrity, commitment to community, and long-term relationships instilled in them by their mother.
